It's tough to change tone of voice given the pronunciation involved; it naturally emphasizes higher decibals and even facial expressions lean towards 'anger'. (Look around and see how few happy faces are speaking long sentences in Chinese). I remember friends in elementary school visiting and asking why my parents were always 'upset'.
