Finding Bohemia at Taikang Lu

It was my turn to plan our outing last Sunday and I decided that we'd visit an area of Shanghai simply refered to as "the lanes" or Taikang Lu (tie-kong loo). It's an old area of Shanghai that was threatened with being torn down several years ago and replaced by high-rises, but after an uprising by residents and locals has been re-invented as an extremely unique shopping/eating district. It's a series of back alleys off of Taikang Road where shops & cafes thrive below while locals still live above ... their laundry hangs all over the area giving it quite an unconventional appeal.

We found a cafe with a rooftop terrace to dine at -- upper right with the blue awning. It was awesome.
