In the midst of noise

We walk past this gate several times a day and it took me until last week to actually see it and notice how pretty it was.

I realized I hadn't paid it any attention because of the practically deafening noise around it ... the near-constant sound of cars, scooters and buses angrily honking at one another, construction workers sawing and hammering and people shouting and spitting ... it made me a bit reflective, wondering what other  things I miss in life due to the noise around me?  I wonder how many people take time to be still in a quiet place and I wonder (as I watch everyone walking around with headphones in) if most people nowadays would go crazy without noise?

I used to wear my headphones a lot to sort of block out the noise and chaos around me as I traveled into Osaka. But, I noticed that the also blocked out my ability to notice things, like your gate, or like people I should be showing kindness to.
Quietness is hard for us. So is trying to find it in the noise of our lives! Thanks for the reminder to be still.
